Ramadan and Apple Rose Pastries

It was almost a year ago when Lubna at Yummy Food asked me to write a guest blogpost for her special Ramadan series "Joy from Fasting and Feasting."

Ramadan is an auspicious month for Muslims all over the world. Muslims join together to fast and increase spirituality, love, camaraderie, and unity during this special month. From dawn, fasters abstain from eating or drinking till the cry of the athan (call to prayer) at dusk reaches their ears, either from a mosque or from our preset phone alarms. The meal that we eat when breaking our fast is called "iftar." Joy from Fasting and Feasting is a clever and well suited title to celebrate the special food traditions at iftar time of Muslims all over the world.

Painting the Egg - Moroccan Love

A little while back, I held a giveaway on my Instagram page with the prize being a custom, hand painted goose egg. I thought it would be fun to take you all behind the scenes of the process of painting a goose egg.

This egg was designed by the winner of the giveaway, Alia. It was inspired by her honeymoon in Morocco; she wanted to capture the vibrant colors and patterns of Morocco in this egg. The Arabic calligraphy on the egg reads "Alia" and "Muhammad," the couple's names.

Farhana's Traditional Chicken Biryani

Every Desi household has their own biryani recipe, but for us cooking amateurs, having a tried and tested video recipe on hand is really useful. Thanks, Mom, for filming this video with me. That's 1000 phone calls you just saved yourself from every time I attempt to cook biryani!

Enjoy this video that we put together of a classic chicken biryani - flavorful, aromatic, and with just the right amount of spice. Good luck in the kitchen and we hope you can try it out.
